How to Dispose of Old Fire Extinguishers

How often should you change fire extinguishers? How do you know when to change it? Do they have an expiration date?

These are very valid questions, now that we have discussed everything you need to learn about fire extinguishers. Here is some information on the proper disposal of fire extinguishers.

Before disposing of your old fire extinguisher, consider what type of extinguisher it is?

Disposal would greatly depend on the type of fire extinguisher you own.

Has it ever been used? If it has been used, has it been serviced and refilled? Once a fire extinguisher is opened, it would usually not hold a charge anymore. This is why it is important to have the extinguisher serviced and refilled once it’s been opened.

Is your fire extinguisher rechargeable? There are fire extinguishers that are rechargeable, so long as they are within the current standard. To determine if your extinguisher is rechargeable, you can ask help from a Fire Safety Equipment dealer.

If you’ve finally decided to dispose of your old extinguisher because it cannot be recharged and it’s below the standard, here are the things that you should do.

  1. Slowly release the pressure of the extinguisher. Do it in an open area.
  2. Leave the canister for a few days to make sure that all the pressure has been released from the extinguisher.
  3. Once the pressure has been released completely, you can throw the canister in your trash bag with your regular garbage.

It’s fascinating how we see a lot of common things around us, but we sometimes know so little about them. We hope that this information will help you and will eventually save you and your loved ones in case of fires.
